Oscars 2019 Highlights: Best Moments of the Night

The 91st Oscars has come to a close, after a thrilling night of electrifying performances, emotional acceptance speeches, and remarkable achievements in all disciplines of filmmaking. The night kicked off with a head-banging performance from Queen + Adam Lambert, who brought the Dolby Theatre to its feet with rousing renditions of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions."

Later in the telecast, former "Saturday Night Live" stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey came onstage to introduce Best Picture nominee BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, echoing their famous characters Wayne and Garth, bowing to Queen and declaring "We're not worthy!"

Fellow "Saturday Night Live" alums Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler were the first presenters of the evening. The trio poked fun at the Oscars, leaving the crowd in stitches before introducing the Actress in a Supporting Role category, which was awarded to Regina King.

Fey, Rudolph, and Poehler weren't the only hilarious women to take the stage. Nominee Melissa McCarthy teamed up with IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK actor Brian Tyree Henry to present the award for Best Costume Design, decked out in full royal regalia reminiscent of THE FAVOURITE's lush costumes, complete with bunny puppets. McCarthy' struggling to open the envelope while wearing a bunny puppet elicited laughs throughout the theatre. The award went to Ruth Carter for BLACK PANTHER.

In her acceptance speech, Ruth Carter thanked her frequent collaborator and fellow nominee Spike Lee, saying "Spike Lee, thank you for my start. I hope this makes you proud!" Carter was previously nominated for her work on Lee's MALCOLM X. BLACK PANTHER took home three awards, the first trophies ever for a Marvel film, including a historic Production Design win for Hannah Beachler, the first African-American nominee and winner in the category. Spike Lee also took home his first Oscar - shared with Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, and Kevin Willmott - for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for BLACKkKLANSMAN.

Musical performances of the nominated original songs led to several standing ovations from the audience. Jennifer Hudson and Bette Midler gave stirring, emotional renditions of "I'll Fight" from RBG and "The Place Where Lost Things Go" from MARY POPPINS RETURNS. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings had the audience yodeling along to "When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings" from THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga gave an intimate, scaled down performance of "Shallow" from A STAR IS BORN, with Cooper joining Gaga at the piano for the finale. When announced as the winner, a visibly emotional Gaga thanked her family, before saying "It's not about winning. But what it's about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it."

The Leading Actor and Actress awards went to Queen Anne and the frontman of Queen, respectively. Rami Malek and Olivia Colman seemed genuinely stunned and delighted by their wins, taking to the stage with effusive thanks to their costars, family, and friends. "It's genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious. I got an Oscar," Colman exclaimed.

Surprise presenter, Oscar winner Julia Roberts, took to the stage in a stunning pink gown to announce GREEN BOOK as the Best Picture of the Year. The film tells the story of Dr. Donald Shirley, an accomplished concert pianist, who hires Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip to drive him during his 1962 tour of the South as protection against the racism that he, as an African American, is certain to encounter. Despite their differences, Dr. Shirley and Tony discover that they enjoy spending time together and have much to learn from each other. "The whole story is about love," director and Oscar-winning co-writer Peter Farrelly said. "It's about loving each other despite our differences."
