Don’t Call It A Comeback: After a 2 year absence from acting, Joan Crawford returned to win the Oscar for Best Actress in the title role of MILDRED PIERCE. She did not attend the ceremonies that evening due to pneumonia, though rumor had it that it was because she was (wrongly) convinced she would not win the Oscar.
