The Academy began to honor performances by actors and actresses in supporting roles in 1937. 1944 was the first year that supporting actors received the full-sized Oscar statuettes rather than smaller plaque-mounted versions handed out in previous years. The first recipients were Charles Coburn, Best Supporting Actor from THE MORE THE MERRIER and Katina Paxinou, Best Supporting Actress from FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS at the 16th Academy Awards, held at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
