In 1987 at the 59th Academy Awards, Marlee Matlin became the first deaf actress to win an Oscar when she was given the Best Actress award for her performance in CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD. In a romantic twist of fate, she was given the award by her co-star and boyfriend at the time, William Hurt, who had won the Best Actor award the previous year for his performance in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN.
