Best Picture Closeup: Captain Phillips

  • By Constance Marshall

The fifth installment of Best Picture Closeup from Oscar.com brings you a firsthand look at the making of CAPTAIN PHILLIPS. Director Paul Greengrass and the stars of the film, Tom Hanks and Best Supporting Actor nominee Barkhad Abdi, spoke at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York about the intricacies of bringing the harrowing true story to life.

A story of two captains, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS pits Hanks against first-time actor Abdi. Playing Captain Richard Phillips, Hanks details the balance of portraying a real person and staying true to both the story and the character. Abdi, a former limo driver, answered a casting call in Minnesota and found himself selected as the young Somali pirate Muse, who takes control of the Maersk Alabama.

Will Abdi’s Cinderella story end with an Oscar? Could CAPTAIN PHILLIPS take home the statue for Best Picture?
