  • By Stephanie Wenger

Want to know more about the making of this year’s Best Picture nominees? Oscar.com’s new series, Best Picture Closeup, is taking you inside Academy member screenings to hear from the cast and filmmakers of the nine 2014 nominated movies.

First up, hear from Best Director nominee Steve McQueen and the cast of 12 YEARS A SLAVE including Best Actor nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best Supporting Actress nominee Lupita Nyong’o. They discuss the effects of slavery and how they tackled bringing these characters to life for the big screen.

Based on a true story, 12 YEARS A SLAVE tells the story of Solomon Northup, played by Ejiofor, who was a free black man from upstate New York but was abducted and sold into slavery in the pre-Civil War United States.

Come back to Oscar.com for more Best Picture Closeups before The Oscars air on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 7 p.m. ET | 4 p.m. PT on ABC and online at oscar.go.com.
